Career Mentorship

Career mentors support a survivor individually as he or she prepares their resume and begins their school or job search. The student-mentor relationship is meant to model a professional relationship. Mentors are required to meet at least four times with their student as they prepare for independence. During these meetings, mentors assist the survivor with their graduation requirements.

As a professional, the mentor helps a student hone their resume and interviewing skills. A career mentor also bolsters a student’s confidence and courage as they bravely venture into the scary world of job applications, interviews, and initial rejection. This mentor relationship is a bridge that links a survivor back into the workforce.

As a fellow citizen, the mentor offers a helping hand so a survivor can now fish for herself and makes sure a survivor knows that she is worth somebody’s time and effort – that she matters to this community.

New mentors go through a new mentor orientation before beginning the mentoring relationship.

Clothing Closet

The Little Tree Project receives tremendous support from the community through donations for clothing, supplies, and food. These supplies help keep our operating costs low, and provide survivors with essential items they need. We need volunteers to help sort, hang, and document donated clothing items. Donations such as supplies and food will also need sorting, storing and a kept record of inventory. Dates and times may vary.

Crisis Counseling

A Little Tree Crisis Counselor will answer texts and calls from survivors in crisis via our Support Line, bringing them from a hot moment to a cool calm through active listening, collaborative problem solving, and safety planning.

When the rest of the country is sleeping, 2/3 of our crisis situations, and by default texting volume, occurs at night. Our greatest need for Crisis Counselors is between 7pm and 3am PST (10pm and 6am EST). If you are a night owl, this could be for you.

Crisis Counselors commit to volunteering 4 hours per week until 200 hours are reached. Ideally, we expect you to fulfill your commitment within one year. Before you begin as a counselor, you’ll also complete a training period to give you all of the expertise you need to successfully and empathetically navigate crisis intervention.

This all begins with training in crisis counseling. In 30 hours, you’ll walk away knowing reflective listening, collaborative problem solving, and crisis management. (These are skills that will help in your personal relationships too!)

You can train from anywhere — in your PJs, in a coffee shop, wherever — and our Crisis Counselors highlight this intervention training on their resumes when interviewing for jobs, applying to grad school, and building out their LinkedIn profile.

This training is free for you, but it costs the organization $1,008 (subject to change) to train each Crisis Counselor. We therefore need volunteers to see training through to the end and serve out their 200-hour commitment.
